Is Chocolate Whipped Cream a Thing?

Absolutely! Adding cocoa powder to a whipped cream recipe makes the most delicious topping for tarts, cupcakes, simple cakes.

Regular whipped cream is super easy to make and is definitely something you should be making at home. By simply adding one extra ingredient, you can have a homemade chocolate whipped cream frosting in under 5 minutes. Seriously!

I love to use chocolate whipped cream on top of cupcakes for a super light but still decadent frosting. It pairs perfectly with these Angel Food Cupcakes and would make an unexpected addition to Banana Cream Pie.

Try chocolate whipped cream with fresh raspberries for a quick and easy sweet treat!

Ingredients in Homemade Chocolate Whipped Cream

You only need 5 ingredients to make this easy, versatile recipe!

5 ingredients for making chocolate whipped cream on a white table
    • Cold heavy cream - look for cream that is between 33 to 36% MF (milk fat). It is also called whipping cream.
    • Powdered sugar - sift before using, if necessary
    • Unsweetened cocoa powder - use Dutch processed cocoa if avaialble
    • Vanilla extract
    • Kosher salt - use a fine, not coarse, sea salt

    See recipe card for quantities.

The Best Chocolate for Chocolate Whipped Cream

Using unsweetened cocoa powder is the easiest way to make chocolate whipped cream. You could use melted chocolate, but it is not worth the hassle of melting and cooling the chocolate all for a comparable flavor.

Instead, use cocoa powder. And if you can, make it Dutch processed.

Dutch processed cocoa uses cocoa beans where their acidity has been neutralized. Alkaline cocoa powder is darker in color and more mellow in flavor than natural cocoa powder.

    Tools and Equipment

All you need to make homemade whipped cream is a mixing bowl and a whisk! While is can be a bit of an arm workout, you can totally make whipped cream by hand.

You can of course use an electric whisk to make whipped cream too. Use a stand or hand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment.

Stop the mixer and whisk by hand until stiff peaks form.

Hint: finishing the whipped cream by hand will help make sure you do not over-mix the frosting.

    Substituions

Unsweetened Cocoa Powder - use Dutch processed cocoa powder for a smoother, chocolatey flavor. If you only have natural cocoa powder, that is fine, but it may taste is bit bitter.

Melted Chocolate - this is also a fine option, but a lot more work. Make sure the melted chocolate is completely cool before adding to the whipped cream.

Stabilize chocolate whipped cream by using the techniques used in this stabilized whipped cream recipes!

    Serving and Storage

Keep chocolate whipped cream frosting refrigerated until serving.

Frost cakes and cupcakes with chocolate whipped cream the same day that it is made. After, you can store a dessert with whipped cream frosting in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

It is not recommend for freezing, unless that is part of the recipe.

    Chocolate Whipped Cream Recipe FAQs

How do you fix grainy whipped cream?

Over-mixing whipped cream will make it grainy. If it isn't too bad, you can save it by add a couple tablespoons of heavy cream and whisking to combine.

    Tessa's Tips

    • Keep the cream as cold as possible before getting started.
    • To keep from over-mixing, stop the electric mixer once the cream thickens and holds soft peaks then finish whisking by hand.
    • Make sure to look for a heavy whipping cream that is between 33 to 35% MF (milk fat)
    • Use the whipped cream shortly after making.
    • For icing cakes, slightly under-whipping (medium peaks) so that it does not get over-worked as you go. Whisk until stiff peaks for piping.
