Happy Holidays!

As I type this, I am sitting in the corner of Everett's nursery as he peacefully naps away.  It's such a busy time of year, and I wanted to make sure he got some great naps in by only being an arms length away just in case he stirs.  It is completely dark (thanks PNW winters where the sun sets by 4pm) and I am getting some last-minute work in before the holidays. Earlier today I was caught feeling lonely and sorry for myself that it is two days before Christmas and we are still in Canada while the rest of the family is in California.  I had to check myself because I have so much to be thankful for this year - how dare I start pouting now, especially since we will be making it back by Christmas night.  Pretty ridiculous, right?

2015 has literally been one of the best years of my life.  I guess it is only natural for me to get a little emotional as it comes to a close.  To kick things off, as you may know, my baby boy was born in January.  He is most definitely the best thing that has ever happened to us.  I never knew I could love so much.  Every day he surprises me with how much he's grown in a year and how smart he is becoming.  Our Everett James - he is the happiest, healthiest, most handsome, and slightly crazy little man around!  Instead of daydreaming about what I might be missing out on since becoming a mom, what's on the schedule two weeks from now, or any other ridiculous task that I've forget to check off my list, I should be living in the moment, counting every peaceful nap that I get to spend snuggled up with my love-bug a blessing.

Career-wise, I'm really starting to feel like I have found my place in the world of food blogs (with a BIG thank you to all you loyal readers!).  Blogging is constantly changing, but I feel like I've finally established my brand and found my voice this year.  I'm finally not pregnant, not in the middle of writing a book, and the little guy is becoming more independent each day.  I now feel like I can give this space my all and am very excited to see what will come of it in 2016.  That being said, I am giving the whole site a face-lift in the new year (more on that to come!).  Think larger images and a sleeker, more modern format - I can't wait!

I feel like this year I have really found my purpose  For me, this space is all about cakes and pastries (sometimes savory ones) for the home baker and encouraging you all to get into your kitchens, turn on your ovens, and bake something!  Because let's face it, I am now a home baker too!  There are soooo many beautiful blogs and amazing recipes floating around (on this blog, too), but I want to dig a little deeper.  I want to have a conversation with you all about which recipes to select for each occasion or season, how to pull-off spectacular desserts, and share more of my tips and tricks from working in professional kitchens.  I don't want to just list off ingredients and the steps it takes to put them together.  I want to talk about the flavours we are working with, what the food looks/smells/feels like, what tools I find helpful, etc.  I want to not only talk about how the food tastes but who we share it with and how it makes us feel when we take a bite.  Instead of just being able to read instructions, I want to help you all learn to bake - like what to look for when a dish is done instead of just going off a clock or why we treat certain ingredients certain ways.  I hope you are all on board, because 2016 is going to be amazing for this little corner on the Internet!

Lastly, while 2014 gave me a great gift in the form of a book deal, 2015 is where the book started to really take shape.  My manuscript was due very early in the year, but I had no idea it would take nearly another 9 months or so to get everything ready for print.  It's been such a great learning experience and I can't wait until Layered comes out in the Spring!


The baby is beginning to stir and stretch.  I am so thankful for every sweet breath I hear him take.  Well, I better be off so we can finish up the last of the Christmas presents, start packing, and gear up for out trip home!
