This deep and dark chocolate cake is perfect for Halloween, but we wouldn’t be caught turning down a slice any other day of the year either. With its notorious pudding-like filling and frosting, this Brooklyn Blackout Cake Recipe is an every-season delight!

“Dating back to World War 2, this legendary cake was first created at Ebinger’s Bakery (1898 – 1972) – a long-standing bakery chain based out of Brooklyn. Its chocolate cake crumb exterior and pudding filling is a nod to the mandatory blackouts of that time to protect the Brooklyn Navy Yard.”
We’re not going to lie - this cake requires a good amount of patience. Pudding as frosting is a slippery concept. If at any point the cake is giving you trouble, just CHILL OUT. Chill your cake, your frosting, and yourself.
Adding the cake crumbs to the outside of the cake offers another opportunity to fudge things back into place. If your layers are sliding, push them back together then chill in the refrigerator. We promise the flavors and inimitable texture are so worth it.
The buttercream piping is 100% optional. But it’s festive, so why not?! Find the full recipe over on The Cake Blog.
